Why You Need Gutters

Why you need Gutters

Benefits of Gutters

From quick afternoon showers to major downpours that cause flooding, rain is a common occurrence in south Louisiana. Your roof collects this rain and sheds it off your home and indiscriminately sends most of it to the ground. As this flow of water pummels the ground, it can cause erosion, flooding, staining, and washouts in the landscaping. As the rain runs off your roof, some of it may also “rollback” underneath the fascia and soffit boards causing mildew, mold, water intrusion, and rot.  A properly designed system of seamless gutters and downspouts will collect water from your roof and direct it to an intentional location.

A gutter system’s most important function is to direct roof runoff away from your foundation. Water pounding the soil around your foundation causes erosion that can undermine your foundation over time. Even if soil is not eroded, water soaking into the ground next to your foundation can seep into the foundation compromising its integrity. This can lead to dangerous situations that are very costly to repair. Seamless gutters mitigate this potential risk.

Seamless gutters and downspouts can also direct water away from areas where it can pool. Often this is next to driveways, sidewalks, and patios. Standing water next to these structures can cause cracking and heaving which pose tripping issues and costly repairs.

A seamless gutter system will also prevent splash back on your home’s siding. Rainwater is going to hit your siding no matter what. When more water slowly drips off the roof, it can stain your siding and encourage the grown of mold, mildew, and algae, shortening its life. Depending on the type of siding, it may even lead to rot.

Another benefit of seamless gutters is, that when installed by professionals, they will prevent dripping water from rolling back under the lip of your roof, your fascia, and your soffits. Over time, this water will encourage the growth of mold and mildew and, eventually, lead to rot.
Lastly, seamless gutters keep you and your guests dry. Gutters keep people from getting wet as they enter and exit a home by directing rainwater from the roof to downspouts, where it can be drained away. Most of the time, moving water to the downspouts will keep flower beds and shrubs from being washed away.
